Arts Workshops

Arts workshops take place termly - Easter, Summer and Advent workshops and are usually for all ages. The workshops can vary from visual arts to theatre to creative writing to movement but may contain elements of several art forms. The Yurt provides a space conducive to creativity. It is calming, friendly and comfortable. We like to play and enjoy the process; the journey is the thing - being curious, trying things out as well as developing skills. The workshops are facilitated by experienced arts teachers and practitioners and welcomes those of all abilities and interests. Participants will be introduced to a variety of stimulus allowing each artist to find their own way of working. Click here to see previous workshops.

Earthed Book Club

The Earthed Book Club takes place monthly where we discuss a book that we have been using in the weekly ‘Earthed’ group. Although they will share a single book each month the 'Earthed' group and the book club function independantly of each other, so you are free to come to either group, or both as you like. The first book we will be discussing is 'Christ of the Celts - The Healing of Creation' by J. Philip Newell.

Earthed

A weekly group of simple seasonal ritual, shared silence and prayer that won't take up the whole evening. We are looking to create a place of stillness and awareness of the seasons and rhythms of the day and our interconnectedness with all of creation. We will be drawing on Christian and other inspirational writings, contemporary spiritual writing and poetry. This group is open to all but will be of particular interest to those who are looking to discover an earthy spirituality within the Christian tradition. Each half term will take inspiration from a book with an option to read and take part in the Book Club.

Films in the Yurt

Films in the Yurt take place termly and are generally for adults. The format is simple - we watch a film chosen according to the simple criteria that we think it is good and worthy of watching. This is followed by relaxed after-film discussion while we munch on food and imbibe a drink or two. Please feel free to suggest films and forget what your parents told you about not talking to strangers - we have discovered that mainly we are all just as shy and as curious as each other. Expect an enlivening film, tasty food and energizing, heartening conversation.

Performance

Every once in a while, the Yurt transforms into a performance space. This usually happens when we come across someone or something inspirational that we feel will go hand in glove with the space - or something that is just so special that we will work at making it fit! There are many as yet unexplored possibilities of creative transformation of the space - (it would be fabulous for any show with shadows) - but it has been a Red Tent for The Real Red Shoes, Cabaret venue, a Tea House for the Slow Tea Ritual with a difference an atmospheric Cinema Space. Poetry Group

This is a new group which will take place termly and is open to all writers. The idea is to form a small, friendly group offering a safe space in which to share our own writing. We hope to offer encouragement and feedback through the sharing and careful listening to one others' work within a friendly atmosphere.

Retreats

We like to offer a weekend retreat at least once a year. We aim to provide a safe and beautiful space. Why a retreat? Our friend Simon Parke puts it very well:
“In essence, a retreat is stepping back from life - in order to return to it more happily and creatively.”

The Breathing Space Yurt is a unique, naturally beautiful and comfortable space. There is also access to a small, light-filled chapel and library, art-room, gardens and a spacious and homely kitchen and we provide delicious home-cooked organic food.

Taproot

Taproot takes place termly. It is a series of days exploring some of the riches of the Medieval Mystics. The aim of these days is to nurture and encourage spirituality by unearthing some of the most creative voices in the contemplative stream of the Christian tradition. The days are suitable for/open to to people of all faiths or none and will take place termly. The days offer creative contemplative space with writings and images, opportunity for art work, story and silence. We will begin in June with ‘A Day with Julian of Norwich’ and in the autumn with Hildegard of Bingen.
